M400E Replacement Feed and Collar for Pelikan M400, Black Ebonite

Installation Instructions

You will need to remove the Pelikan nib from the nib assembly. This removal is normally accomplished with a nib knockout block and a punch. Use a light touch and be sure not to bend or twist the nib during disassembly.

To assemble the nib assembly, lay the nib on top of the feed such that the ink slit in the nib is centered over the ink slot of the feed, and the tip of the nib extends about 3mm (0.12″) beyond the tip of the feed. Place the collar onto the end of the feed and push it forward until it holds the nib in place. The collar should have the screwdriver slot facing the tip, with the threads towards the end of the feed. Check the alignment of the nib to the feed and the positioning of the tip of the nib to the tip of the feed and adjust as needed. When the nib and feed are aligned as desired, push the collar onto the nib until the collar is nearly even with the size marking (EF, F, M, B, etc.) of the nib. Check the alignment of the nib on the feed, and the distance from the tip of the nib to the tip of the feed. If alignment or distance is poor, disassemble and try again.

Holding the nib assembly in your fingers over the logo on the nib, without touching the tines, insert the nib assembly into the section of the pen, and turn clockwise until it stops. Do not over tighten; finger tight is all you need. Ink your pen as usual and enjoy.

While assembly can be accomplished using your fingers, it is unlikely you will be able to disassemble it without a nib knockout block and punch.

Note: The M600 nib is longer than the M2xx/M4xx/M7xx nibs. M600 nibs should not be used in M400 pens unless you set the nib deeper into the collar than you would for M400 nibs or you will damage the nib when closing the cap on the pen.

A note on interference (friction) fit.The M400E nib assembly is held together with an interference fit. This means the diameter of the inside of the collar is smaller than the combined diameter of the nib sitting on the feed. This method of fit is required so the nib and feed don’t move in the collar while you write. The initial fit may be very tight, so tight that you may have difficulty getting the nib and feed fully inserted into the collar.  If the fit is too tight for your finger strength, here are two ways to assist you getting the nib and feed fully inserted into the housing.

  1. Soak the feed and collar in warm, soapy water (dish soap works well) for a few minutes, and try again. Chances are the additional lubrication will allow you to fully seat the nib and feed into the collar.
  2. After you get the nib assembled into the housing, use your pen’s piston filler to flush the soapy water out of the nib assembly with clean water until all the soap is gone.

If the assembly is still too tight, then use this method (for ebonite only):

  1. Soak the collar ONLY in hot water from your tap. You can use water up any temperature that your bare skin can allow, but don’t exceed 60C (140F). Allow the ebonite collar to soak for a few minutes. It will enlarge and soften slightly due to the hot water and make it easier to slide the nib and feed into the housing.
  2. Be careful and make sure not to burn yourself in the hot water. Insert the nib and feed into the collar and adjust as needed to align the feed and nib. Allow the assembly to cool to room temperature and it is now ready to be inserted into your Pelikan pen.
